Notes from Aug. 23, 2012

Our first class was exciting!  Twenty-eight people in the Norcross Lab of the ISC!  I must say it was a bit intimidating for me, but the enthusiasm of the class soon put me at ease.

We went through the course paperwork:  pre-advisement forms, syllabus, and attendance policy.
Here are some of the class activities:

Cultural Perception Worksheet - Students compiled a variety of perceptions  of classmates and then met to discuss the reality.  The class then discussed the perception v. reality and why.

Word Splash - small groups arranged 10 words from the course description, the groups predicted what the words were from and what they described.

Personal Word Splash - participants created their own word splashes about themselves on a piece of notebook paper and then shared them using "Circle of Friends" strategy.

Circle of Friends - a fluency strategy that has many different names.  Students form two circles an inner and an outer.  The two circle face each other and each person has a partner in the other circle.  Members of the outer circle tell about their personal word splash for 30 seconds.  Time is called.  The outer circle takes a step to the right and repeats the description again.  This continues until the outer circle returns to the beginning.  Then the inner circle begins speaking using the same 30 second step to the right format.

Following each activity discussions were held as to how these could be modified for use in their classrooms.
Please feel free to post your comments about these activities.

These were just a few of the activities from our first meeting.
