I think that I am about 75% done with my case study. I have done most of part one and am working on expanding the questions on part two. This assignment has helped me get to know more about my Japanese student and how to best help him learn in my classroom.
ReplyDeleteThat is great that you can apply this straight to your class this year. I don't have any ELL students this year, so unfortunately, I haven't gotten quite the personal growth I would like. Although every time I see my student I interviewed, he is excited to see me and talk. Keep it up!! This class is very informative!
DeleteBravo! Way to go! I found as I started writing I thought I might be expanding too much! It is hard to know while you are in process, probably better to finish up, then go back and expand!
DeleteSounds like you're doing great! Keep up the good work.
DeleteSounds great Courtney. I know you student is going to benefit from all of your hard work. When I first began teaching most of my students were Japanese, I can't wait to find out if anything has changed since then.
ReplyDeleteI'm finding my student doesn't always fit the "norm" from what I have learned about Japanese culture and schools. He only went to school in Japan for a few months before coming to the US last year. This might be why.
DeleteI am finding the same thing with mine. He was born here in the U.S. and his parents have been here for 30 years. I'm at the point now of trying to piece together everything that I have.
DeleteI am not as far as I would like to be on the Case Study due to report cards, benchmarks, conferences, and other personal stuff. I have all the information from the student and the parent, now I just need to put it all together. I have this weekend blocked off to finish this up.
ReplyDeleteYou can do it! The only reason I have gotten a lot done is because I was home sick with the stomach bug one day last week. I tried to use my time to sit and write. I have found the Culture Grams website helpful. Its under Media Services if you haven't heard of it already.
DeleteLaurie, I love the way the student you interviewed responds to you. It is even more impressive when you consider that you don't serve him. I know your paper is going to be great.
DeleteLaurie:
DeleteSounds like we are in the same boat! It is cool just observing and when I did the culture study understanding some behaviors (ah ha's) and then again sometimes observing just a child! Do you think not being the classroom teacher inhibits us? I think our observational time only doesn't allow preconceptions.
Laurie, I am in the same boat too! My kids had dentist appointments today...so I took the day off, but took them back to school! I spent the time working on my chapter 4 reflection and plan to use this weekend to finish up the case study. We can do it!
DeleteI here ya. Life is just too busy you know. We can do this though. I just keep telling myself in a matter of months we'll have our endorsement and have learned some new strategies and methods to help our kids.
DeleteLauri,
DeleteI'm glad you have the weekend blocked off to finish. Good luck and keep going!
I think we are on the same page. I have been thinking for weeks, had the parent interview done probably 3 weeks ago, but haven't typed anything much yet. I have resources bookmarked and just actually spent too long on tonight's assignment highlighting the culture. Good thing I can use it for the case study! I am thankful for the week-end, too. Good luck with yours.
DeleteI totally understand, this is a tough time of year for GCPS teachers. I feel the same way and am not as far along as I would like to be but keep going (that's what I keep telling myself). What we are learning is beneficial. = )
DeleteDon't worry. We will get it all done. We are learning so much about our students, and I think a lot about ourselves in the process.
DeleteI am slowly plugging through all the writing after collecting all my information. I really enjoy observing my student though and exchanging ideas with his classroom teacher and ESOL teacher. I do not feel comfortable yet sharing my opinions completely yet as I don't feel like a stakeholder as I am just an observer as of now!
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting the things you can learn about students when you just stop to observe them! Its great that you have been able to collaborate with the student's classroom teacher and ESOL teacher. I am sure you are learning a lot.
DeleteDoris, keep plugging along. I'm so glad you have been able to observe in both settings. I'm sure your paper will be awesome!
DeleteMy case study is turning out very differently from the way I thought it would! My student is a direct served student, but through the course of my interview with his mother I learned his parents have been in the U.S. for over 30 years. They are from Laos. I also managed to show my ignorance of that country during my interview and have since learned a lot. Should have done my research first!
ReplyDeleteChristen, I'm sure everything worked out fine during the interview. I find conferences of even parents of American-born children sometimes have times that each of us were thinking something different than what it turns out. Keep plugging along! You will get there.
DeleteChristen,
DeleteMy students' family is from Cambodia. It will be intersting to compare the cultures since they are relatively close in location. Good luck on your project; I'm sure it will be great!
Task 4 Cultural Case Study
ReplyDeleteThe student I chose for my case study is from Vietnam. I chose him because he is such a great learner and works so hard. He is in many before and after school activities. He is running for ice-President of Student Council now.
If this posted twice, please forgive me. I could not see the post on the Blog.
Denise,
DeleteI also chose a student from Vietnam. She is also a great learner and just a very nice person. I hope everything goes well as you finish up.
Kiel's Case study update:
ReplyDeleteThe student I have chosen was actually born in the US. Her parents "moved here" from Mexico 10 years ago. However they return to Mexico for the summer each year. Mom said that they came here for the education and go home to be with family.
Thanks so much for helping keep me on task and up to date with all the assignments. I hope your case study is going well. We can do it!!!
DeleteI still have a long way to go before I finish my case study. I have interviewed parent, but I don't know if I can get it done. I'm not one for making excuses, but this has been the most stressful school year I have ever had. We are piloting the new teacher evaluation system in addition to many other firsts (Fountas & Pinnel, ELPS, online RBES, etc. etc. etc.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain Yvonne. I am been super busy too. I tried to work on one heading per night. It gets easier as it goes along. You can do it!
DeleteI'm with you, Yvonne! One thing at a time, that's what I keep telling myself! We can do it!
DeleteI am there with you Yvonne! Its also being a very challenging year for me, but lets stay focus I know we can do this!
DeleteI am in the same boat with you, Yvonne. I will be completing it all this weekend. Really hard to get it all done with little ones at home, especially sick ones and the unbelieveable workload at school. And GTES! But, I'm NOT giving up and neither will you. We are all in this together.

ReplyDeleteCase Study Update:
I chose a student from the Dominican Republic. I have many Mexican Americans in my class and I assumed that his family was also from Mexico. To my pleasant suprise, I am learning about a county I knew almost nothing about. I have enjoyed this part.
The case study it's self is a little overwhelming. It's a lot of work when we also have jobs, conferences, families, etc. I know that in the end, it will be beneficial. Just gotta keep on plugging. Super happy it's not due until Sunday though. Thanks Lisa!
Keep plugging away! We're all in this together :-) We're going to make it, right?!
DeleteCarrie,
DeleteI feel your pain. I am hoping to have a very productive next couple of days. I hope you do to. Good luck.
I've enjoyed really getting to know my case study student. Researching her culture, getting to know more about her life, and discovering who she is as a learner has not only been interesting, but also really beneficial as her teacher. Knowing more about our students and where they have come from can only help us as educators. Although it's been a bit of work, it's been worth it! :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree Carrie... I only wish we had enough time to research all of our students cultures and spend time getting to know them. Keep up the good work!
DeleteCourtney,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip about the Culture Grams on the Media Services page. I will check that out. Thanks for sharing. I hope you are feeling better now.
I am hoping to have a very productive Friday and Saturday concerning my case study. I have a lot to do yet. I am hoping my momentum picks up and everything turns out well.
ReplyDeleteI have started my Case Study and hope that I will productive tomorrow and Saturday!

ReplyDeleteMy student is was born in America, but her family is from Mexico. I enjoyed interviewing her dad, and she is just tickled that I chose her culture to do for this project. Long way to go with the actual writing of the paper, though.
