How Culture Affects Teaching and Learning

[I]n the words of a wonderful Native Alaskan educator: ‘In order to teach you, I must know you.’ I pray for
all of us the strength to teach our children what they must learn, and the humility and wisdom to learn
from them so that we might better teach.
—Lisa Delpit (1995, p. 183)

I found the above quote about teaching and learning from one of the first sites I visited when researching how culture affects teaching and learning. As educators we all have most likely had classes during college concerning various theories in education, how students learn best, and stages of learning students experience. All of these theories are great, informative and have their place; however, I think, as educators, we cannot forget the role a student's culture has in their education. Just as our own culture has had an effect on us, both as students and teachers.
